●● 熱き思い
天性の俳優と、努力して俳優になった２つの種類の俳優が存在するのなら、彼は後者に属するだろう。彼の俳優としての才能は天性とは思わない。が、努力すれば彼のような偉大な役者になれると見せてくれた人物だ。彼の培われた演技力も素晴らしいが、何よりもその存在感と威厳。彼の映画を見た後には、必ずその存在が胸に残る。デンゼル・ワシントンと共演した「グローリー」では、そのワシントンの躍動感溢れる演技と対照的に、その存在意義をアピールしていたと感じる。ふと、映画を思い出した時に、いつもフリーマンの顔がよぎる。「ドライビングMISSデイジー」みたいな大人しいフリーマンよりも、私は「ストリート・スマート」で見せた怖いピンプ役や、「ワイルド・チェンジ」で見せたクレイジーなジョー・クラーク校長のような大声張り上げ、子供と楽しんでいた笑顔が忘れられない。その「ワイルド・チェンジ」の笑顔や、「ベティ・サイズモア」や「セブン」で、ふとした時に見せた笑顔が、本物なのか演技なのか... そんなふとした所が、フリーマンらしい演技なのだ。同じテネシー出身で有名なウィスキーのように、彼の演技は熟成されたようだ。

●● バイオ
テネシー州のメンフィスに生まれたモーガン・フリーマンは、小さい頃から見ていた映画のスターに憧れて、学校の演劇の賞に輝いた事もあった。後に、LAのコミュニティー大学に進み、パイロットになるのが夢だったフリーマンは、5年程空軍のメカニックとして従事した。パイロットになれなかったフリーマンは、学生の頃にその才能が認められた演劇を、また始めるようになった。
劇団に入り、少しずつ役を貰えるようになり、映画のエキストラも経験したが、芽がすぐには出ず、70年に入ると子供向けTV国営チャンネルのPBSの「The Electric Company」で、Easy RiderにひっかけたEasy Reader役で、やっとお茶の間に顔を知られるようになった。その後に子供向けの映画等に出演したが、それでも、とんとん拍子には進まずに、また長いスランプになる。80年代に、インディペンデンス系映画「Death of Prophet」では、マルコムXを演じたりしたが、多くの人々の目にはさらされる事がなかった。
1987年に、「ストリートスマート」という、スーパーマン役などで知られるクリストファー・リーブ主演映画で、ピンプ役を演じ、映画こそはヒットしなかったが、当時「The New Yoker」に執筆して発言力のあった映画批評家ポーリン・ケールに「Is Morgan Freeman the greatest American actor?」との批評を受けて、一揆にその才能が知られるようになり、オスカー助演男優賞のノミネートされた。
52歳の時に、やっと主演の映画「Lean On Me/ワイルド・チェンジ」を発表し、その力強い演技で、その存在を映画界にアピールした。続いて出演した「ドライビングMissデイジー」にて、オスカーの主演男優賞にノミネート。1994年にも「ショーシャンクの空に」で、再びオスカー主演男優賞にノミネート。念願だった、パイロットの夢も、今は個人機用のパイロット資格を取得し、夢が叶ったようだ。また、同じように下積みが長かったサミュエル・L・ジャクソンの良き相談者となってきた。今は昔と逆で、年を重ねる毎に出演作増え、2004年には5作品も控えている。
