1967年UCLAに編入。ベトナム戦争を受けて徴兵登録に向かうも、事務員の態度に憤慨し徴兵を逃れる目的もあり、ロサンゼルス・コミュニティ・カレッジにてエンジニアを目指していた。準学士号を取れる寸前で、イザベル・ジーグラーのライティングクラスを取り、そこで才能を発掘され、1967年にUCLAへ。

「プロジェクト・ワン」
最初の作品は、指導教官から借りたSwitarレンズを装着したボレックスカメラで、通常の8mmコダックカラーフィルムを使って撮影したが、タイトルも付けておらず、現存していないと考えられている。
