今まで主役を張ってきた男優のイメージを変えた人物。子役スターから、ここまで大成できたのは、その生まれながらの演技力による運命だったのだろう。子役時代の「Cornbread, Earl and Me」で、既にその演技派としての運命を感じる。ティナ・ターナーの自伝映画「What's Love got to do with it」でのアイク・ターナー役は、平凡な役者が演じていたら、たんなる虐待夫としてしか描かれなかっただろう。ところが彼が演じたことで、アイク・ターナーのティナ・ターナーへの嫉妬心が見事に描かれ、アイクの威厳が保つ事が出来たのだろう。また「ボーイズ'ンザフッド」で見せた、完璧でない男ながらも、子供の前では威厳を保つ父親像は、この映画が評価された一番の理由となっただろう。ポール・ウィンフィールドが70年代に、その時代のせいで大成できなかった事を、このローレンス・フィッシュバーンが見事に成し遂げていると感じる。

●● バイオ
ジョージアのオーガスタに生まれたローレンス・フィッシュバーンは、更正員の父と教員の母が、幼い頃に離婚し、それを機にNYのブルックリンに住むようになる。10歳の頃には、舞台に立つようになり、14歳の頃に映画「Cornbread, Earl and Me」で、いきなり主役の座を掴んだ。その後に、フランシス・コッポラ監督の映画「地獄の黙示録」の撮影にティーンながらに参加し、その数年にも渡るフィリピンの撮影で、彼は後に自ら語ったように、大人の俳優から覚えたお酒とドラックに溺れた。80年代は、映画の脇役で終わる事が多かったが、スパイク・リーがメジャー映画会社にて初めて製作した映画「School Daze／スクール・デイズ」の主役で、いい評価を受けた。その後に「Boyz 'N the Hood／ボーイズ’ンザフッド」の主役の父親役で、その天性をさらに開花した。1993年のティナ・ターナーの自伝映画「What's Love got to do with it／ティナ」で、アイク・ターナーを好演。オスカーにもノミネートされた。映画のみならず、舞台でも活躍し、1992年にはトニー賞も獲得している。最近では、大ヒットし一大ブームになっている「マトリックス」のモーファス役で人気だ。
