ジンバブエ出身でショナの王女と言われている母を持つタンディ・ニュートン。父はイギリス出身の白人男性で、幼い頃まではジンバブエで生活していた。その後に政情不安定により、父の故郷のイギリスに渡り、そこで育った。
11歳の頃にロンドンの芸術学校に入学。モダンダンス等を習っていたが、背中を痛めて断念。しかしそれにより映画のオーディションを受けて、1991年に「Flirting/ニコール・キッドマンの恋愛天国」で映画デビューを果たす。いきなり主演の一人を演じ、ニコール・キッドマンやナオミ・ワッツと共演。その後にロサンジェルスに渡るが、イギリス訛りがあった為に上手く役につく事がなく、またイギリスに戻る。そしてケンブリッジのダウニング大学に入学し、人類学と考古学を専攻。しかし大学在学中にも映画などに出演していた。
ジェームズ・アイボリーの1995年作品「Jefferson in Paris/ジェファソン・イン・パリ／若き大統領の恋」にてアメリカ大統領のトーマス・ジェファソンの子供を妊娠した女性を演じた。1997年には人気ラッパー/俳優のトゥパック・シャクールがの遺作となったアメリカ作品「Gridlock'd/グリッドロック」に出演。続けて、オプラ・ウィンフリーが関与したアメリカ文学の名作の映画化「Beloved/愛されし者(2008)」では主役に抜擢された。
2000年にはトム・クルーズ主演の大作「Mission: Impossible II/Ｍ：Ｉ-２」へ出演。2004年にはアカデミー賞の作品賞に輝いた「Crash/クラッシュ」にも出演し様々な賞にもノミネートされた。
